The scandals fo Brasilian Candidte Aecio Neves
We Recommend
Since
he was selected to run in the second round of the presidential
elections on October 26, the right wing candidate Aecio Neves has tried
to get away with serious accusations of corruption and drug-trafficking.
Among the several controversial scandals in which
his name was mentioned, one involves a helicopter belonging to Neves'
company, Agropecuaria Limeira, filled with 4.5 tons of cocaine,
and seized by the Federal Police of Espiritu Santo, in the south east of
the country last year.
The helicopter belonged to congressman Gustavo Perella, son of the senator and former president of the soccer team Cruzerio, Zeze Perella, both close political allies of Neves, also former governor of the region. Perella was recently released from prison after claiming that employees of Agropecuaria Limeira, along with three other accomplices, took the vehicle without authorization.
“The press covers with an unexplainable discretion what could be the biggest scandal of the last decade,” argued journalist Miguel do Rosario in Tijolaco.
Yet the helicopter case could only be the tip of the iceberg. The attorney's office of Minas Gerais is investigating the possible illegal allocation of contracts to the company Agropecuaria Limeira, while Neves was governing this state. These contracts include the purchase of the property Guara, where the helicopter was seized. The airport where the helicopter landed is suspected to have been built with public funds in 2010 – the last year of Neves' mandate at the head of Minas Gerais, according to Pulzo.com, on a property belonging to a Neves' great uncle.
So far the candidate only acknowledged having used the clandestine track in various opportunities, during family or business trips.
